Church History

Christ United Methodist Church traces its beginnings to Methodism’s earliest days in Kent County.  A society, formed in response to Frances Asbury’s preaching, erected the Kent Meeting House five miles outside of Newtown which is now known as Chestertown. Many years of change brought division and reform, as well as several relocations.

In 1883 a movement began by the church youth for better accommodations, resulting in the present site.  The children worked together toward purchasing a bell for the new church before the first foundation brick was laid.  They presented a “Little Folks Concert” in Stam’s Hall, charging .35 per ticket. Construction began at the present site with the laying of the cornerstone on July 19, 1887.  Christ Methodist Church was dedicated to the glory of God on October 14, 1888.

The Victorian architecture and magnificent stained-glass windows provide a beautiful setting for fellowship and worship. Once again, responding to the need of more space for our Sunday School, the Education wing was added and dedicated to the Glory of God in the spring of 1995.  Christ Church exists today because of the faithfulness of its members and the abundant blessings of our Lord.  We invite you to join us.
