From
our beginnings in 1830, Christ Church has been a diverse community of the
faithful seeking to share in the influence of the divine spirit which
brings peace, joy, encouragement, and loveliness to life. Ours is,
therefore a congregation with a rich tradition of worship, fellowship,
mission, and concern for the human condition. Yet our greatest gift is
our openness of heart and mind.
We
invite all to join us in worship and share in our love of God through
teaching, preaching, fellowship, support and outreach.
Every
original work of art must have its own beginning. So it is in the ancient
tale of creation that in the beginning there was a seed. For us the seed
was sown a century before it would grow to be Christ Church. Methodism’s
founder, John Wesley, had devised an ecclesiastical system to evangelize
what would become the American frontier. He would prove to be a man of
vision ahead of his time.
For
the benchmark beginnings of Christ Church, we shall choose January 8,
1830. At that moment a spiritual ambition, the dream of a religious
fellowship in a new church was emancipated. One can only imagine it was a
moment of awakening guided by great spiritual and inspirational forces.
It was an act of faith driven by the profound hope that worshippers would
come under the influence of that divine spirit which brings peace, joy,
encouragement, and loveliness to life.
Born
out of a passion to worship God and serve all people, those of us
assembled in this directory are both heirs and custodians of the dream of
our founders. Our church family represents a long and rich tradition of
worship, fellowship, mission, and concern for the human condition. This
gallery of names and faces displays a widely diverse community of
faithful committed to sharing the love of Christ through: teaching,
preaching, fellowship, support, and outreach. Yet our greatest gifts are
the openness of our hearts and minds.
Sir
Christopher Wren is buried in St. Paul’s, the cathedral of London which
he designed. He asked that this epitaph be put on his monument:
“If you would see His
monument, look about you.”
As
we celebrate yet another generation of worship at Christ Church, may the
same words apply to us: that others may look around us and see with
pleasure what we have wrought in service to the Lord.
